Catherine Richards

Method and Apparatus for Finding Love
by Catherine Richards
Patent Application Number: US 2003/0083544 A1
Patent Pending

In 2000, the year the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office began publishing patent applications publicly, Catherine Richards and collaborator W. Martin Snelgrove filed an application that became the primary source material for this artwork. The patent is still pending, so due to new patent rules enacted on March 16, 2013 visitors are required to sign a non-disclosure agreement before viewing the artwork, which is presented alongside enlarged illustrations from the application. Richard’s conceptual artwork subverts the traditional vocabulary of patent applications to break down human desire into its simplest parts, thus juxtaposing the complexities of love with the complexities of current patent laws.
